That's what Don Taylor, printmaking teacher at Brookhaven, suggested when I was stumped about what to do next. Lines and shapes are what I notice everyday... everywhere. Slim grass shoots from bamboo cuttings and red bud leaves.
Printmaking at Brookhaven has been a lot of fun; and Holy Cow! Surprises around every turn. Nothing turns out as you think it will. It's a real "Mr Toad's Wild Ride" of a discipline. Have I made clear it's unpredictable? And yet... I'm strangely attracted to the process! . This 6"H X 6"W work is printed in the relief method with chine-collé process used to add the golden bubbles and the cartoon bird.. Home of 2 great state universities, Oklahome University, in Norman. And Oklahoma State University in Stillwater; the the Oklahoma Thunder NBA Basketball team, and the American Banjo Museum, for goodness sake. And it was recently and lovingly described by Sam Anderson in the New York Times magazine as “...a pure distillation of our nation’s essential weirdness — a bouillon cube of America.” NYT article.
