This is the companion piece to Evidence of Life: Baby Keys, which I posted November 7, 2019 At the time I was kind of infatuated with the warm earthiness of Raw Umber. The size is 12 X 12". Relief Prints.
After making a bunch of masks for friends and family members, I finished out my spring printmaking class at home - without a printing press. These 3 artist proofs are collographs, and untitled. See more Collographs.
Engraving. 2 color, 1 pass. Printed in March on the American Tool Press at the print shop at Brookhaven. (I miss that press!) See more engravings.
Since I moved to Texas I have made the trip to my family home in Oklahoma City hundreds of times. There is often an eye-popping cloud/sky/light display to blow my mind while driving. Sometimes it's a breathtaking sunset.
This is an engraving using aquatint with soap ground on a copper plate. The size is 4 ½"H X 12"W. See more engravings Aquatint with Soap Ground resist - an experiment. Sometimes the calculated and planned ideas are disappointing. This image started as an experiment. I was trying out a new resist made of ivory soap. I had no expectations for a good result, and was pleasantly surprised.
My take away? At least at this point printmaking is a crap shoot; and a mystery. I pick up stuff when I take walks in my neighborhood. I like to think of these Items as indicators of civilization. For obvious reasons, the city is teeming with such artifacts - discarded house numbers, party favors, and recently, a large colorful set of Baby Keys, like one you may have given as a gift to a couple with a new baby.
This 12 X 12" woodblock print was cut by the laser printer at Brookhaven College. (Such a great tool, the Zing Laser engraver!) It's #1 in a set of 2 woodblock prints. I'll post the 2nd one soon. A teacher at Brookhaven suggested I try "carving" a woodblock with the laser router. So Monday morning, I learned how to do this from a vector file. I already had a drawing I thought would be fun, and converted it to an adobe illustrator file. Then I turned on the laser. (I can't not think of Doctor Evil as I say that.) It made kind of a whooshing sound as it booted up, and for the rest of the day the room smelled like a campfire. Yesterday, I printed it.
